Piedmont Macon Opens Obstetrics Emergency Department
Tuesday, April 8th, 2025
Piedmont Macon Medical Center recently opened a new Obstetrics Emergency Department (OB-ED) dedicated to treating emergency and unexpected prenatal and postpartum issues of women.
Prior to the OB-ED’s launch, a pregnant patient with complications would go to the Emergency Department before being transferred to the Labor & Delivery triage area. Although the patient would see a highly skilled nurse, there was no guarantee they would see a physician during the visit.
Now, a board-certified physician in the OB-ED will evaluate all patients who are 20 weeks or greater in their pregnancy who have obstetrical concerns.
“We are thrilled to introduce Piedmont Macon’s new Obstetrics Emergency Department, where expectant mothers can receive immediate, specialized care in their time of need,” said Kari Willingham, director of Women’s Services at the hospital. “With an on-staff physician available 24/7, we’re ensuring that every woman in our community has access to expert care during this critical time in their lives.”
OB/GYN hospitalist care is a growing trend nationwide that reduces delays in care and improves patient outcomes. In addition to ensuring that expectant mothers receive expert care at a moment’s notice, the hospitalist can communicate with the patient’s personal OB-GYN about her visit and treatment plans, ensuring a seamless transition of care.
“Offering this service reflects Piedmont Macon’s commitment to prioritizing maternal health and enhancing the overall patient experience, providing peace of mind and expert care for both the mother and her baby,” Willingham said.
Because it is staffed 24 hours around the clock every day, patients can go to the OB-ED at any time, although their physicians also may refer them.
The Piedmont Macon Women’s Services Department features a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that offers the most advanced neonatal care and services for infants born as early as 23 weeks’ gestation, as well as babies born with critical illnesses. The department also offers a variety of maternity and education services, including free lactation and childbirth classes.
