Next Phase of Freedom Park Improvements Celebrated

Macon-Bibb County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate the next phase of improvements at Freedom Park (3301 Roff Avenue). The event will be held by the lake between the recreation center and the new baseball fields, and it will be broadcast live on Facebook. This event is by invite only in order to maintain an appropriate number of people, and people should wear facemasks in compliance with the local mask mandate.
This phase is funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and includes a new playground, new pavilion, renovating the old pavilion, a new basketball court, and a new dock for fishing in the lake. Previous phases of work included eight new baseball and softball fields, sidewalks, benches and bicycle racks, scorers’ tower, new concessions building and a terrace, batting cages, bleachers, scoreboards, lighting, maintenance building, a splash pad, relocation of Morgan Drive so it doesn’t go through the middle of the fields, and conversion of the gymnasium into the Bishop Frank Ray Boxing Arena, featuring two rings and 600 bleacher seats.
