Houston County School District Proposes School Zone Revisions

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, September 10th, 2026

During the Houston County Board of Education meeting on September 8, a drafted proposal was introduced that will adjust attendance zones for select elementary and middle schools in the district. All proposed changes would take place beginning at the start of the 2027-2028 school year. The proposed zoning maps are available at https://www.hcbe.net/rezoning2728. For convenient access, a QR code linking directly to the proposed zoning maps will also be posted at each school. Parents of currently enrolled students who are included in the proposed zoning changes will be notified with details of the meeting and how the zoning changes will affect their family.

Based on current enrollment, the approximate estimated numbers of elementary school students impacted by the proposed changes are listed below.

  • 125 students from Centerville Elementary will be rezoned for Eagle Springs Elementary School.
  • 15 students from Kings Chapel Elementary will be rezoned for Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary Schools.
  • 25 students from Tucker Elementary will be rezoned for Langston Road Primary and Elementary Schools.

Based on current enrollment, the approximate estimated numbers of middle school students impacted by the proposed changes are listed below.

  • 555 students from Bonaire Middle School will be rezoned for Veterans Middle School.
  • 35 students from Huntington will be rezoned for Bonaire Middle School.
  • 205 students from Perry Middle will be rezoned for Veterans Middle School.
  • 35 students from Perry Middle will be rezoned for Mossy Creek Middle School.

The proposed attendance zoning adjustments are designed to address enrollment growth at several elementary and middle schools while also creating better alignment between school attendance zones. The changes would establish more consistent feeder patterns, allowing more students to remain with the same group of peers as they transition from elementary to middle and high school.

This improved alignment will provide greater continuity for students and families while helping the district balance enrollment and plan for continued growth. The proposal will also include the attendance zone for Veterans Middle School, which is scheduled to open in August 2027.

Students currently enrolled at a school affected by the proposed attendance zone changes will have the option to remain at their current school through the highest grade offered at that school. Families who choose this grandfathering option will be responsible for providing transportation to and from school. Transportation will be provided for students who choose to attend the school assigned to their residence under the new attendance zones.

“As Houston County continues to grow, we have a responsibility to plan ahead, balance enrollment across our schools, and make the best use of the resources we have,” said Dr. Richard Rogers, Superintendent of Schools. “Our goal is to take a student and community-friendly approach to rezoning by making thoughtful adjustments that better align our feeder patterns and, whenever possible, allow students to stay together with their peers as they move from elementary to middle and high school. We believe these proposed changes will help us meet the needs of our growing community while continuing to do what is best for our students.”
