As demand for trained healthcare workers continues to grow, Helms College is expanding its ability to prepare students for healthcare careers with new training labs and classrooms at its new School of Health Services in Macon.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 13% from 2025 to 2035—with approximately 109,700 openings projected each year nationwide.

Helms College will celebrate the expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 24. The new facilities support the College’s Multi-Skilled Medical Assistant program and give students opportunities to develop clinical and administrative skills in a hands-on learning environment.

Students receive practical training in areas including phlebotomy, clinical procedures, patient care, medical scheduling and billing—skills used in medical offices and other healthcare settings.

The expansion responds to continued workforce needs across Georgia and the nation while creating additional opportunities for individuals pursuing careers in an essential and growing field.

“Healthcare employers need professionals who are prepared to meet the needs of their patients and communities, and that preparation requires more than classroom instruction,” said Kris Furtaw, Chief Education Officer of Helms College. “Our new School of Health Services gives students the opportunity to practice essential skills, build confidence and gain the knowledge and experience needed to enter the meaningful and deeply rewarding field of healthcare.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will bring together community leaders, healthcare professionals, educators and workforce partners to recognize the expansion and highlight the importance of preparing skilled healthcare professionals.

The Multi-Skilled Medical Assistant program combines clinical and administrative training. Students prepare for responsibilities that may include assisting with patient care and clinical procedures, supporting medical office operations and helping coordinate patient services.

The School of Health Services is part of Helms College’s broader commitment to career education that responds to employer and community needs while creating career advancement pathways to a more abundant life.
