Guest Artist Recital: Renee Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra #1

Symphony, redesigned with you in mind. One of the first hybrid orchestras of its kind, the Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra blends rising stars from the McDuffie Center for Strings with professional musicians and mentors from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to make classical music more accessible. Hear timeless favorites and bold new works at the historic Piedmont Grand Opera House. Major funding for the MMSO is provided by the Peyton Anderson Foundation.

MMSO welcomes Case Scaglione to the podium for the very first time. The former associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic arrives with two of the most compelling soloists of their generation. Violinist Stefan Jackiw, newly appointed faculty of the McDuffie Center and praised by the Boston Globe for playing of “uncommon musical substance,” joins faculty cellist Brannon Cho, First Prize winner of the International Paulo Cello Competition, for Brahms’ Double Concerto. The program opens with Diamond’s Rounds, a jubilant American classic composed during World War II after a conductor simply asked him to “make me happy,” and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1, nicknamed the “Classical” — a piece so witty and light on its feet, it sounds like Mozart reborn with a mischievous grin.

CraftLit at Washington Memorial Library

A monthly crafting program for adult makers and readers of all skill levels to create unique projects inspired by titles in the library’s collection.

 

Starting Tuesday, September 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, you can join other adults at Washington Memorial Library for CraftLit! This month’s craft is Origami.

 

This program aims to promote functional and print literacy through creative crafting experiences, which are widely recognized for fostering positive mental health outcomes. By pairing hands-on making with book discussions directly tied to our library collection, CraftLit expands public visibility, enhances adult learning, and builds supportive connections within our library community.

Our Pastel Pop-Up workshop is a fun, beginner-friendly class where you can relax and hang out with friends while a local artist teaches you how to use pastel drawing techniques to create a unique piece of artwork!

 

Learn to create a vibrant drawing of autumn wildflowers using oil pastels. No art experience required for this beginner-friendly workshop. Molly Fox will guide you through the steps. $30 includes all materials for the class. Open to ages 10 through adult. September 24, 7:00-9:30 pm.
