For more than four decades, Chuck Leavell has occupied a rare place in American music, performing alongside some of the biggest names in rock and roll while building a life devoted to the land he calls home.

Leavell will bring both sides of that story to The Piedmont Grand Opera House on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. for An Evening of Film, Songs and Stories with Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man.

The intimate evening will combine live music and storytelling from Leavell with a screening of the acclaimed documentary Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man, which chronicles his remarkable journey through music, forests and family.

A Lifetime Achievement Grammy winner and longtime keyboardist and musical director for The Rolling Stones, Leavell’s career has included work with Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, George Harrison, John Mayer and numerous other artists. His work with The Allman Brothers Band ties him to Central Georgia’s music history, while his decades with The Rolling Stones as music director have made him a fixture in one of rock’s most enduring touring bands.

Away from the stage, Leavell has devoted much of his life to forestry and conservation. Along with his wife, Rose Lane, he operates Charlane Plantation, a celebrated tree farm in Middle Georgia and a nationally recognized example of sustainable forestry.

That connection between music and the natural world is at the heart of The Tree Man. The documentary follows Leavell through his life as a musician, environmentalist, husband and father, exploring the very different worlds that have shaped his life and work.

The evening at The Grand offers audiences an opportunity to hear Leavell tell those stories in his own words, alongside performances of songs from his long musical career and a screening of the documentary.
