The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the five-county Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area saw an increase in employment in July, while the unemployment rate fell four-tenths of a percentage point over the month to 3.8%.  A year ago, the rate was 4.0%.

“July brought a clear victory for Georgia: Unemployment fell in every single metro area and region,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “When state leaders, local communities and Main Street businesses row in the same direction, results follow. We aren’t slowing down – our focus remains on putting Georgians to work, growing paychecks and building real opportunity in every corner of the state.”

The labor force in Macon decreased by 267 over the month and rose by 567 over the year, totaling 99,539.

Macon finished the month with 95,716 employed residents, up 87 over the month and 738 over the year.

Macon ended July with 101,800 jobs, down 400 over the month and 600 from the same time last year.

In July, initial unemployment claims in Macon decreased by 15 from the previous month and were down by 27 from the same month last year, totaling 402.
