Metro Macon Reports Job and Labor Force Gains in June; Unemployment Rises to 4.2%

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the five-county Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded labor force and job gains in June, with an unemployment rate of 4.2%, up four-tenths of a percentage point over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.2%.
“June brings the temporary seasonal changes we see every year as schools let out for the summer, but as Georgia’s workforce continues to grow, our year-over-year trends remain stable,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “Short-term fluctuations are normal in a resilient economy, and the bigger picture is clear: Georgia remains a state where opportunity is within reach, hard work is rewarded, and every Georgian has the chance to build a better life.”
The labor force in Macon increased by 246 over the month and rose by 1,183 over the year, totaling 99,872.
Macon finished the month with 95,695 employed residents, down 155 over the month and up by 1,129 from a year ago.
Macon ended June with 102,300 jobs, up 200 over the month and 300 from the same time last year.
In June, initial unemployment claims in Macon increased by 97 from the previous month and were down by 5 from the same month last year, totaling 417.
