'There's No Reason Not to Do It' - How a Local Company is Helping Young Workers Enter Trade Careers

Jylon Clowers never saw himself sitting behind a desk.

At 18, fresh out of high school in Jones County, he made a choice that went against the traditional route — skipping college and picking up a pair of wire cutters instead. Three years later, he's an electrician with Speir and Associates, pulling wire, wiring panels and doing work he says most people won't.

"Trades are dying," Clowers said. "Many people don't wanna do it no more, so somebody's got to do them."

The demand for skilled trade workers has surged in recent years as fewer young people pursue vocational careers, driving up wages and creating a growing workforce gap across the country.

Now, Speir and Associates — a Macon-based electrical contractor — is trying to close that gap from the inside out.
