Metro Macon Reports Labor Force, Employment, and Job Gains in May; Unemployment Rate at 3.8%

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the five-county Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded labor force, employment, and job gains in May, with an unemployment rate of 3.8%, up four-tenths of a percentage point over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.8%.  

"Every May, a new wave of talent enters Georgia's workforce as thousands of graduates begin their career search. This is what a growing talent pipeline looks like, and it is why companies keep investing here year after year,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. The labor force in Macon increased by 538 over the month and rose by 1,525 over the year, totaling 99,662.

Macon finished the month with 95,882 employed residents, up 153 over the month and 1,514 from a year ago. 

 Macon ended May with 102,400 jobs, up 600 over the month and 100 from the same time last year. 

 In May, initial unemployment claims in Macon decreased by 54 from the previous month and were down by 100 from the same month last year, totaling 320.
