Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, February 23rd, 2026

The Gordon Cine Film Series is back at Gordon State College for its second year, bringing three free screenings to campus this spring, including a March 4 showcase of Weirdo with filmmaker Marc Pilvinsky and a live Q&A and acoustic set from Athens band Five Eight.

The series’ featured event will take place on Wednesday, March 4 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium with a screening of Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight. The documentary explores the journey of Athens musician Mike Mantione, whose return to music following a mental health crisis shaped both his life and the legacy of his band, Five Eight. Director Marc Pilvinsky will introduce the film, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and band members and a short acoustic performance.
“This movie is a love letter to the act of creativity and the power of working with people that you love, even if they drive you crazy sometimes,” Pilvinsky said.

The Gordon Cine Film Series launched in 2025 with the support of GSC Foundation Board member Dan White, whose interest in expanding humanities-focused programming at GSC inspired the initiative. White partnered with Stephen Powers, GSC professor of English, to coordinate the series, drawing on Powers’ experience teaching film-focused coursework influenced by the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound poll of the greatest films of all time.

The spring lineup also includes a Feb. 25 screening of John Ford’s 1939 historical drama Drums Along the Mohawk at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium. A third screening is scheduled for March 25 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium, with the featured film to be announced.
All Gordon Cine Film Series events are free and open to the public, offering opportunities for students and community members to engage with film in an academic and cultural setting.

Funding for the series is made possible through the Constance H. Chinery Performing Arts Fund, reinforcing continued investment in arts and humanities engagement on campus.
