Celebrating Black History Month in Macon-Bibb
Monday, February 9th, 2026
ebruary 2026 has been proclaimed Black History Month in Macon-Bibb County, honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans and recognizing their lasting impact on our community and nation.
The proclamation was presented during Tuesday evening’s commission meeting by Community Affairs Executive Director Dr. Henry Ficklin, on behalf of Mayor Lester Miller. Black History Month serves as a time to reflect on the courage, resilience, and leadership of African Americans who fought for liberty and freedom, from conductors on the Underground Railroad to those who worked to end segregation and advance civil rights.
Despite facing significant barriers, African Americans have shaped the economic, educational, political, artistic, scientific, and technological advancement of the United States and continue to do so today. Their stories are an essential part of our shared history and our progress forward.
Throughout the month, Macon-Bibb County will be highlighting places and spaces in the community that preserve and share Black history. Follow along on Macon-Bibb County’s Facebook and Instagram pages to see these features throughout February.
