Tuesday, January 20th, 2026
Kurt Fichtner, M.D., a retired U.S. Army colonel who has more than 25 years of cardiothoracic surgical experience, has joined Piedmont Heart Cardiothoracic Surgery at Macon.
Dr. Fichtner treats a spectrum of pulmonary conditions – both benign and malignant – including mediastinal masses and thymomas and esophageal disorders. Additionally, he performs robotic surgical procedures as well as robotic diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies.
Dr. Fichtner received his medical degree from University of Chicago/Brown University and was fellowship trained in cardiovascular thoracic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
During his career, Dr. Fichtner has served on the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, the University of South Carolina’s Department of Surgery and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Piedmont Macon CEO Stephen J. Daugherty said Dr. Fichtner joining the practice, which is located on the campus of Piedmont Macon Medical Center, is a win for Middle Georgia patients.
“Dr. Fichtner’s more than 25 years of experience in cardiothoracic surgery means our patients needing this type of surgery can get world-class care right here at home,” Daugherty said. “His expertise and commitment to patient-centered care will strengthen our cardiovascular program and elevate the level of care Piedmont provides to this community.”
In his free time, Dr. Fichtner enjoys flying for the Air Force Auxiliary, a volunteer, non-profit organization that is the official civilian auxiliary to the U.S. Air Force. The auxiliary was chartered by the U.S. Congress to support communities with cadet programs, emergency response and aerospace education.
The Piedmont Heart Cardiothoracic Surgery office at Macon was established in 2023 by cardiac surgeons Richard Harvey, M.D. and David Langford, M.D. Last fall, Kishore Harjai, M.D., an interventional structural cardiologist, also joined the practice.
Piedmont Heart Cardiothoracic Surgery at Macon is located at 310 Hospital Drive, Building B, Suite 330. To contact the office, call 478.200.8152.
