Thursday, November 6th, 2025

During Tuesday’s election, the voters of Macon-Bibb County passed the Education Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Tax for the sixth consecutive term. Beginning in 2001, the ESPLOST has funded capital projects that have benefited students, families and educators across the District. This year, more than 73 percent of voters approved of the measure.

“Our community has spoken, and we are grateful,” said Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims. “We look forward to continuing to offer our best for students through safety, transportation, technology and state of-the-art facilities. They deserve it, and we are proud to know our community agrees.”
In recent years, the ESPLOST has funded such projects as the new Springdale Elementary School building on
Northside Drive and the renovated Harry B. Thompson Complex on Shurling Drive. Additionally, classrooms across
the District have received technology upgrades like touchscreen panels and audio enhancement systems, along
with security upgrades in every building.
“It is always wonderful to see how involved our community is in the voting process, both for the ESPLOST and
otherwise,” said Myrtice C. Johnson, President of the Bibb County Board of Education. “We will continue to work
hard for each and every one of our students and schools as we move forward.”
During informational meetings leading up to the vote, District officials shared plans for projects that would be
funded if the ESPLOST passed. Among these projects were continued security improvements, renovations to 10
schools, furniture replacements, accessible playgrounds and wide-ranging technology updates.
