On Tuesday, September 9, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department officially welcomed two brand-new Sutphen 100-foot platform ladder trucks with two traditional Push-In Ceremonies.

The first was held at Station #10 on Oglethorpe Street at followed by a second at Station #18 on Peake Road North. Community leaders and members joined firefighters at both stations, while many others tuned in live on Facebook to watch the historic tradition.

“There’s a lot that goes into this field and having the equipment is the most important piece of that,” said Commissioner Paul Bronson, who represents District 2 where Station #10 is located in.

“As a retired firefighter, I know just how critical it is to have the right equipment when every second counts,” said District 4 Commissioner Joey Hulett. “These new ladder trucks will not only support our firefighters but will also help save lives and protect families across Macon-Bibb.”

The Push-In dates back to the 1800s, when firefighters had to physically push their horse-drawn engines back into the station after returning from a call. Today, it serves as a meaningful way to introduce new apparatus into service.

“These advanced apparatuses enhance our ability to deliver efficient and effective emergency response across the community,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “Their strategic placement ensures protection of critical areas, from the heart of downtown to growing residential and business corridors, at the highest level.”

With the addition of these trucks, Macon-Bibb has eight aerial apparatuses positioned throughout the county, ready to respond to high-rise fires, rescues, and other emergencies. These investments not only strengthen the county’s ISO Class 1 rating but also demonstrate a continued commitment to building a safer, stronger community.
