EMA Encourages Community To Celebrate National Preparedness Month
Thursday, September 11th, 2025
September is National Preparedness Month, and the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is encouraging everyone to take this opportunity to ensure they’re ready for emergencies. This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” emphasizes the importance of getting back to the basics of emergency planning.
“Preparedness doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, it starts with simple steps you can take today,” said EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. “We’re committed to helping everyone in Macon-Bibb feel safe, informed, and ready.”
Throughout the month, the EMA is sharing practical preparedness tips on social media. In August, they also distributed over 400 weather radios to community members as part of their ongoing safety outreach.
First Friday Fun Meets Preparedness
On Friday, September 5, EMA will partner with NewTown Macon during Downtown Macon’s First Friday event. Stop by the Robins Financial Credit Union tent to pick up a bingo card and participate in a fun, weather-themed scavenger hunt through downtown restaurants. Participants will have a chance to win an emergency preparedness kit or a weather radio.
4 Steps to Prepare: Macon-BibbEMA’s Recommendations
The Macon-Bibb EMA encourages everyone to take four key steps to stay safe and ready:
-
Know Your Risk
Understand the types of disasters that could impact your home, school, or workplace. Knowing your risk helps you take the right actions to stay safe. Learn more at Ready.gov.
-
Make a Family Emergency Plan
Create a plan so every family member knows what to do in an emergency. Use this fillable Family Emergency Plan to get started in four easy steps.
Tip: Emergencies can be expensive, but preparing doesn’t have to be. Visit Ready.gov’s Low and No-Cost Preparedness page for budget-friendly tips.
-
Build an Emergency Supply Kit
Stock up on essentials like food, water, medications, and hygiene products. Prepare a “go-bag” so you’re ready to evacuate quickly if needed. Get a complete supply checklist at Build a Kit.
-
Stay Informed
Staying informed before, during, and after a disaster is crucial for your personal safety. Real-time information is a lifeline. Keeping up with official alerts from sources like MBCAlert, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news stations helps you make critical decisions, such as when to evacuate or where to shelter in place. This information can also alert you to immediate dangers, like flash floods, downed trees, or downed power lines.
Let this month be your reminder to prepare, not panic.
Start small, stay informed, and help make Macon-Bibb a safer, more resilient community.
