Big Brothers Big Sisters Invites Middle Georgia to “Paint the Town Green” this September

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, September 10th, 2025

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia is calling on the community to “Paint the Town Green” during the week of September 14–20, 2025 in celebration of Big Brothers Big Sisters Month. The campaign invites businesses, schools, and organizations across Central Georgia to show their support for youth mentoring by incorporating green into their workplaces, storefronts, and digital platforms.

“This is not a fundraiser—we’re not asking for money,” said Betsy Fitzgerald, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia. “We’re asking for something even more valuable: awareness and action. By turning green, our community will shine a spotlight on the 150+ children waiting for mentors across Central Georgia—most urgently boys and young men in Bibb County.”

The Return on Mentoring Investment
Mentorship pays lifelong dividends for the young people involved. According to national research:

  • BBBS Littles are 20% more likely to enroll in college after high school.

  • They enter the workforce earning 15% higher income between ages 20–25.

  • BBBS mentorship closes nearly two-thirds of the socioeconomic gap, giving youth a stronger foundation for the future.

And all of this comes from the commitment of mentors who spend just a few hours a month with a young person.

Community Engagement
From restaurants to schools to hotels, a variety of local businesses and organizations are already stepping up to turn their spaces green. Big Brothers Big Sisters is still welcoming new partners to join the effort. Participating businesses will be featured on BBBS’ website, social media, and community map of supporters.

Culminating Celebration – Dragon Boat Races & Beach Party
The Paint the Town Green week will conclude with the 13th Annual Dragon Boat Races on Saturday, September 20 at Lake Tobesofkee’s Sandy Beach in Macon. The public is invited to enjoy the excitement, with the most action taking place between noon and 3:00 PM. The event will also feature the annual BBBS Beach Party with a DJ, family fun, and the always-popular Bigs vs. Littles volleyball game. Admission and parking are free—guests are encouraged to bring tents, chairs, and a picnic to make it a day of community spirit and celebration.
