Nearly 130 More Miles of Roads Identified for Paving the Way
Thursday, August 7th, 2025
At the Commission Meeting on August 5, Mayor Lester Miller presented a list of 459 roads slated to have all or portions repaved in the next several years as part of the Paving the Way program. The list includes 129.36 miles of road and is estimated to cost $44 million from the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), state Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds, and the General Fund. RFPs for this round of roads will be released within the next 30-45 days.
“The condition of our roads is one of our community’s top priorities, and we are putting more money toward it than ever before,” says Mayor Miller. “We have identified the worst roads in our community and will focus first on them, as well as roads that are heavily traveled every day. There isn’t a part of our county that won’t have major improvements for daily travel.”
Roads were identified through a scan of the more than 1,100 miles of county-owned and paved roads. Every road segment was rated on a scale of 1-100, and roads were selected for this list based on the following criteria:
Roads rated 30 and below.
Arterial and collector roads rated below 40.
Connecting, nearby roads rated between 30 and 55.
Well-trafficked roads in industrial areas.
In July, Macon-Bibb posted four Request for Proposals (RFPs) for 36.18 miles of road improvements, totaling $11,841,367.77. Funding for that round comes from the 2018 SPLOST and state Local Maintenance & Improvement Grants (LMIG). To see the RFPs, click here.
Another step in preparing for the historic funding, Mayor Miller and his administration are encouraging contractors and subcontractors to sign up and do business with the County.
