13th Annual Heart of the Dragon Boat Races Set to Make a Splash in Macon-Bibb
Tuesday, August 19th, 2025
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia is thrilled to announce the 13th Annual Heart of the Dragon Boat Races, taking place on September 20, 2025 at Sandy Beach at Lake Tobesofkee in Macon, Georgia. What began as a small community fundraising event has evolved into a premier Southeast paddling competition — and this year’s races are poised to be the biggest and most exciting yet.
The 2025 event has grown beyond Macon’s borders, attracting a record number of professional and club teams from across the Southeast, now outnumbering local corporate teams for the first time. These teams not only bring high‐energy racing to Central Georgia — they also fundraise within their home states to support the life-changing mentoring programs of Big Brothers Big Sisters right here in our community. The result is a welcome boost in tourism revenue for Macon‐Bibb County as visiting teams book hotel rooms, dine locally, and explore everything our vibrant city has to offer.
“At the end of the day, whether a team is traveling hundreds of miles or coming from a few blocks away, they’re here because they believe in our mission to support at-risk Central Georgia youth — and they know BBBS delivers results that truly matter,” said Betsy Fitzgerald, President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia.
Local Teams Still Welcome to Join the Race
The event is not yet full, and BBBS is encouraging teams from local businesses and local organizations such as churches, Robins Air Force Base, gyms, and schools to jump in on the action. Team registration starts at $800, with proceeds directly benefiting BBBS mentoring programs across Central Georgia.
-
No experience required — BBBS provides boats, paddles, professional training, life jackets, and steerers.
-
Team Rosters can include up to 14 paddlers and 1 drummer (10-person boats), and participants must be 14 or older.
-
Dragon boating is a beloved sport among corporate groups, athletic teams, and even breast cancer survivor crews for its team-building power and inclusive spirit.
Fun for Spectators Too!
