I-16/I-75 Interchange Long-Term Traffic Shifts Start July 18th
Monday, July 14th, 2025
Beginning July 18, Georgia Department of Transportation crews will install long-term traffic shifts at the I-16/I-75 interchange and put traffic on two newly constructed I-16 eastbound travel lanes. The new configurations will remain in place for an estimated six months.
Weather and on-site conditions permitting, crews will install these new configurations between 9 p.m. on July 18 and 10 a.m. July 19, temporarily reducing traffic in the area to one travel lane for safety.
Drivers on I-75 northbound and southbound heading to I-16 eastbound will be directed through the new traffic patterns with lane striping and roadway signage as follows below.
I-75 southbound from just south of Pierce Avenue to I-16 eastbound:
- Traffic on I-75 southbound will be directed to shift to the left onto the newly constructed lanes on I-16 eastbound.
- This shift will also restrict access to the I-16 eastbound exit ramp to Spring Street/Exit 1A. Traffic will be detoured past Spring Street to exit at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
I-75 northbound from just north of Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound:
- Traffic on I-75 northbound will be shifted left onto the newly constructed lanes of 1-16 eastbound.
- From this direction, drivers will have full access to exit as usual at Spring Street/ Exit 1A.
These two traffic shifts are needed to allow crews to construct pedestrian bridges over the Ocmulgee River, a component of the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project. Utilization of the new I-16 eastbound travel lanes for the shifts represents another construction milestone toward completion of the Project’s phase 4, scheduled for completion in late 2026.
