Houston County Board of Education Approves 2026-2027 Academic Calendar

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, June 17th, 2025

The Houston County Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2026-2027 school year during their monthly meeting on June 10, 2025. The calendar includes 180 days of school for students and 190 workdays for faculty, including 10 professional learning and planning days. The school year will begin on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and end Wednesday, May 26, 2027. High school graduations for the Class of 2027 will be held on Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28, 2027, which will allow families to celebrate the full Memorial Day weekend together.

When planning Houston County’s school calendar, the following is considered:

  • Traditional holidays;
  • Dividing the year as close as possible to 90 days per semester;
  • Ending the school year and post-planning dates before the Memorial Day holiday;
  • Ending the first semester before Christmas break so students take finals at the end of the semester instead of after the break; and
  • State and national testing dates.

The calendar observes several holidays during the school year: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Presidents' Day. The calendar has a week off in October for Fall Break, in November for Thanksgiving, and on March 29-April 2 for Spring Break. Students will also be off for two weeks for Christmas and New Year’s holidays between the first and second semesters.

The last day of school each semester will be a half day on December 18, 2026, and May 26, 2027. Students will have two distance learning days on September 8, 2026, and February 16, 2027.
