Macon-Bibb County celebrated the start of renovations at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center with a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, May 5. You can watch the full ceremony here.

“This project is a big one for our Recreation Center and community surrounding it,” said Recreation Department Director Robert Walker. “Our neighbors will be able to enjoy enhanced amenities and be able to access the center easier with new sidewalks and more parking. We are so excited!”

“This is what keeps the youth of Unionville off the street, gives them something to do, somewhere to go,” said District 5 Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tempore Seth Clark. “I think that this project is important to the future of Unionville and to the future generations that need to be looked after so they can one day look after us.”

Construction has already begun with Spillers Design & Construction spearheading the project designed by WM2A.

“We are so excited about the possibilities at this center now,” said Frank Johnson Recreation Center Supervisor Clarence Thomas. “I thought that the first SPLOST meant something, and it did, but this SPLOST is super special. Especially when you think about everything that is going on.”

The $2,047,000 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funded renovations will include a renovated pool, two new playgrounds, new pavilions, new tennis/pickleball court, renovated baseball field with new fencing, new parking lot, new sidewalks, and an added conference room and weight room.
