Macon Volunteer Clinic Announces the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting for New Location

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, February 21st, 2025

The Macon Volunteer Clinic (MVC) board, staff, and volunteers are pleased to announce the grand opening of their new location at 770 Walnut Street in Macon, Georgia. This brand-new healthcare facility was fully funded through grants from various community organizations, foundations, and private donations. Thanks to their generous support the capital campaign goal of 2.5 million dollars was completed in early January.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony and community reception are planned for Friday, March 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM. The new downtown location enables MVC to expand its services to eight additional counties in the DPH North Central Health District and will make it more accessible to Middle Georgians who work but cannot afford the high cost of healthcare insurance.

“We are extremely grateful to our community partners, donors, and especially Stroud and Company for their excellent renovation work, which has enabled us to relocate to a state-of-the-art facility,” said John F. McCard, Executive Director of Macon Volunteer Clinic. “Our vision has been inspired by our founder, the late Dr. Chapin Henley, who believed that all working individuals deserve access to quality healthcare in a setting that honors and respects their dignity as human beings, regardless of ability to pay.”

In 2001, Dr. Chapin Henley and a dedicated group of volunteers launched the Macon Volunteer Clinic to address disparities in healthcare and ensure no one in our community is left behind. While the previous location (4,000 square feet) of Macon Volunteer Clinic on Rogers Avenue has served the community well for over twenty-two years, the newly expanded facility (11,000 square feet) at 770 Walnut Street) will offer designated spaces for primary healthcare, dental services, eye care, and mental health counseling as well as space for community health classes.

Dr. Gary Bernstein, Chair of the Macon Volunteer Clinic Board and Chief Medical Officer at Piedmont Medical Center, added, “The Board and I are thrilled with the opening of our new location. While many people talk about the inequities of our healthcare system, the Macon Volunteer Clinic is a living symbol of our community’s desire to address those issues positively and ensure that the working people who serve our Middle Georgia community have access to exceptional medical and dental care.”

In 2024, Macon Volunteer Clinic acquired the 770 Walnut Street building through a generous lease agreement with Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. This new location marks a significant milestone in MVC’s ongoing commitment to the uninsured working people of Middle Georgia.
