Community Leaders Launch "Go BIG for Macon-Bibb" Campaign to Renew SPLOST

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, February 4th, 2025

Community leaders and local advocates officially launched the "Go BIG for Macon-Bibb" campaign today in support of renewing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and announced the formation of the 2025 Macon-Bibb SPLOST Renewal Committee. This initiative emphasizes the importance of keeping the penny to continue investing in critical infrastructure, public safety, and community improvements that enhance the quality of life for all residents.

The committee, composed of local leaders from various sectors of the community, includes Theron Ussery, committee chair; Virgil Adams, committee treasurer; and committee members Stephanie Folsom, Erin Keller and Izza Sola (committee member bios and photos are attached). The committee will educate residents about the benefits of keeping the penny ahead of the Tuesday, March 18 vote. This SPLOST is expected to generate over $450 million for critical infrastructure projects while keeping Macon-Bibb property taxes low.

"Renewing the SPLOST means we can repair our aging roads and bridges, expand our airport and invest in public safety without adding new tax burdens," said Ussery. "Importantly, over 70% of SPLOST revenue comes from visitors and commuters, allowing Macon-Bibb residents to benefit without bearing the full cost of these improvements."

The SPLOST renewal extends an existing penny sales tax first approved in 2018. Funds are legally designated for capital projects like road and bridge repairs, airport runway expansion and public safety investments. SPLOST revenue cannot be used for operational expenses, ensuring transparency and accountability.

"A vote to keep our penny is a vote to build a brighter future for Macon-Bibb," said Keller. “Continuing this long-term investment ensures ongoing support for economic growth and job creation and further strengthens our community without burdening property owners. Let’s Go BIG for Macon-Bibb!"

Key benefits of the SPLOST renewal include:

- Infrastructure Improvements: Repairs to aging roads, bridges, sidewalks and additional street lighting.

- Airport Expansion: Extending the runway to attract economic opportunities.

- Public Safety Investments: Funding additional law enforcement resources and other safety enhancements.

- Economic Development: Job creation and fostering private sector growth.

Early voting for the SPLOST renewal begins on February 24, with Election Day set for Tuesday, March 18. Macon-Bibb residents are encouraged to vote YES to keep moving the community forward.
