Georgia Municipal Association Honors Commissioner Russell McMurry with State Government Service Award

The Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) proudly presented Commissioner Russell McMurry, P.E., of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), with the prestigious State Government Service Award on Monday, January 27, during the Capitol Connection Breakfast at its annual Cities United Summit. This award recognizes Commissioner McMurry's exceptional leadership, dedication, and partnership with Georgia's cities to enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure and economic vitality.

The Capitol Connection Breakfast, attended by hundreds of government leaders, public servants, and legislative stakeholders, featured remarks from notable leaders, including Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and GMA CEO and Executive Director Larry Hanson. Governor Brian Kemp also addressed attendees via a video message.

"Russell McMurry epitomizes the qualities we admire in public service: integrity, dedication, and the ability to lead with balance and vision," said Hanson when presenting the award.  "His contributions have not only strengthened Georgia’s transportation system but have also provided meaningful support to local governments, ensuring they are equipped to address infrastructure challenges. He truly embodies what it means to be a servant leader.”

Commissioner McMurry began his career with GDOT as an engineering trainee in 1990 and has since held numerous key positions, culminating in his unanimous appointment as Commissioner in 2015. Under his leadership, GDOT has advanced Georgia’s transportation infrastructure, a critical element of the state’s economic competitiveness and quality of life.

Hanson also commended McMurry's efforts in advocating for cities, noting his role in securing increased transportation funding for local governments without requiring financial matches. "Commissioner McMurry’s proactive approach, including his advocacy during budget discussions, has ensured that Georgia’s cities have the resources needed to maintain and improve local roads and bridges," said Hanson. Commissioner McMurry’s recognition underscores his unwavering commitment to the state of Georgia and its cities.
