Gordon State College received a $1.9 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education in October, supporting its mission to foster student growth and prepare graduates for regional workforce success.

Over the next five years, GSC will receive approximately $415,000 annually through the Title III Strengthening Institutions Program, aimed at enhancing retention, boosting graduation rates, and strengthening institutional infrastructure to support student success.

“We’re honored to receive the Title III grant, which advances our mission to support student success,” said Dr. Tonya Y. Moore, GSC executive director of external relations and strategic initiatives. “This funding strengthens our advisement and retention initiatives, equipping students with essential resources for reaching graduation. I’m proud of our team’s commitment to making this possible—together, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish.”

The GSC Title III Task Force has developed targeted strategies for the grant project to address key priorities in line with the college’s mission, while also advancing regional economic development and supporting upward mobility. The plan includes enhancing student support services, providing teaching and advising training for faculty, staff, and peer mentors, offering targeted assistance in key courses, and expanding tools and programs that foster student success.

“We’re extremely thankful for this grant, which reinforces our support for students,” said Dr. J. Ardovini, GSC provost and vice president of academic and student affairs. “Our leadership is fully committed to implementing the student onboarding plan, expanding professional development, and ensuring each element of this project produces positive, lasting results. We’re also dedicated to securing further funding to sustain and grow these efforts.”

The Title III Strengthening Institutions Program, as outlined by the U.S. Department of Education, provides essential funding to eligible higher education institutions, helping them enhance their services for economically disadvantaged students. The program focuses on improving academic quality, institutional operations, and financial sustainability, while working to reduce educational disparities and promote greater student success.

“This award is a significant milestone that will enhance student success at Gordon State College for years to come,” said Dr. Donald J. Green, GSC president. “Our recent rise in retention and graduation rates is a testament to these efforts, and this grant enables us to build on that momentum and achieve even greater outcomes for our students.”
