Gordon State College Theatre will kick off its 2024-25 season with the acclaimed comedy Blithe Spirit. Performances are set for 6:30 p.m. from Oct. 24 to 26 at the Fine Arts Theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Written by Noël Coward, Blithe Spirit is described by the playwright as “an improbable farce in three acts.” According to Concord Theatricals, the play delivers “wit, conflict, and big laughs” as it tells the story of a grouchy novelist who becomes haunted by the ghost of his first wife.

Lisa Cesnik Ferguson, GSC’s director of theatre, rates the production PG-13 and invites the community to attend, stating, “We are Barnesville's theater!”

Blithe Spirit is both a mysterious ghost story with seances and poltergeists and a farcical comedy,” Cesnik Ferguson said. “As an added bonus, because our campus is so musical, we have added live music of the period for all of the pre-show and scenic transitions.”

The play is rated PG-13 as some material may be inappropriate for small children.

Earlier this month, the GSC Theatre Department welcomed two guest artists who worked closely with the student actors to prepare for the production. They also offered master workshops for the community. Adam Archer from Los Angeles and Lucy Flournoy from Berlin, Germany, brought their expertise in acting, dance, improvisation, singing, and experimental performing arts to enhance the rehearsal process. Both are accomplished professionals in their fields.

An adapted version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, by Cesnik Ferguson, will be featured in the upcoming spring theater production, running April 3-6, 2025.

The 2024-25 season is made possible in part through a grant from Upson EMC in Thomaston, Georgia and GSC Board of Trustees member, Dan White, with the endowed Constance H. Chinery Fine and Performing Arts Support Fund.
