The Houston County Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Rogers has been selected as the sole finalist for Houston County School District’s next Superintendent of Schools. The Board interviewed candidates after gathering feedback from parents, school district employees, and the community. The Houston County Board of Education will vote to confirm the appointment at the next regular Board meeting on Tuesday, November 12.

Dr. Rogers has served as the Deputy Superintendent of the Houston County School District since 2021. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Superintendent of School Operations and Director of Personnel. Dr. Rogers has held several teaching and leadership roles since he joined the Houston County School District in 2004. He taught science and language arts at Bert Rumble Middle School and Huntington Middle School. Dr. Rogers was selected as an assistant principal at Quail Run Elementary School before being named principal of Matt Arthur Elementary School in 2012.

“When the Houston County Board of Education began the process of searching for the next superintendent, we were looking for someone who could build on the strong reputation of our District and who would continue moving Houston County forward,” said Helen Hughes, Chair of the Houston County Board of Education. “Our board unanimously agreed that Dr. Rogers was the right person to lead the Houston County School District.”

Dr. Rogers earned a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education and a Master of Education in Middle Grades Education from the University of West Georgia, formerly known as State University of West Georgia. There, he was selected as the Outstanding Master of Education Student in Middle Grades. Later, he received a specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Columbus State University, where he was awarded the Certificate of Academic Honor in Educational Leadership. In 2012, he earned a doctorate in Leadership from Valdosta State University.

The Board began the search process after Dr. Mark Scott announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. After the vote in November, Dr. Rogers will begin his new role on June 2, 2025. The public can learn more about Dr. Rogers, including his biography and resume, at www.hcbe.net/superintendentsearch.
