Flint Energies Plans April 1 Base Rate Change, No Residential Energy Rate Increase

Monday, February 5th, 2024

Flint Energies’ residential energy rate will remain steady at the current 10.55 cents per kilowatt-hour; however, the monthly residential base charge will increase from $34 per month to $35 per month, effective April 1, 2024. This change continues an initiative that has been underway for several years to gradually align the monthly service charge with the fixed costs of operating the electric system. The increase equals $12 for one year of service, the average cost of one lunch meal.

Nearly 9,000 Consumer-members under the General Service—Non-Demand rate, also known as Rate 12, will see an increase in their monthly service charge from $35 per month to $36 per month.

In other rate changes approved by the Board of Directors on January 23, Members who own and operate a distributed generation facility (i.e., solar panels) will see a decrease in the purchase rate for excess net energy as it moves from 5.485 cents per kWh to 3.347 cents per kWh. This decrease is representative of what Flint Energies can purchase energy for from other generation sources.

“While simultaneously being equitable and fair to each rate class, these changes allow our not-for-profit cooperative to balance its financial needs by continuing to provide reliable, safe electric service,” says Flint Energies Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Nelms. “As a cooperative, all Members share in the increased costs of electric energy, even when those costs are beyond the control of the Cooperative board and employees.”

Flint Energies’ residential energy rate of 10.55 cents per kWh has remained unchanged since 2017.

Every two years, Flint updates its cost-of-service calculation, which offers a direct and accurate reflection of current expenses.

“The price of electricity has risen less than many other Member costs,” Nelms adds. “Even with the rate changes, the value of electricity remains very high.”

Low Income Option

Members who are approved for the Low-Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) can be placed on Flint’s low-income rate. After April 1, Consumer-members who confirm their LIHEAP standing with a check payment will be eligible for a reduced monthly base service charge of $17.50 per month. Local Community Action Agencies administer the LIHEAP program.
