The Canopy Project Celebrates the end of the Macon’s Bicentennial Year
The Canopy Project Gallery will open its doors for the last time on December 30, 2023. The gallery art exhibit showcases the work and achievements of contemporary artist Wini McQueen. The exhibit and gallery were funded by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, the Griffith Family Foundation, Macon-Bibb County's Bicentennial Commission, as well as individual and corporate donors and friends. Macon Arts Alliance serves as the fiscal sponsor of the project.
McQueen’s exhibit brings to focus a visual declaration of Macon’s significance after 200 years of existence. Most significant in praising Macon is the monumental two story, forty foot high, cotton fabric hanging above the food court in the Macon Mall. The Canopy, composed of 25 magnificently colored banners, is a standout of contemporary artistic vision. The people of Macon came to see the work in its debut performance. It stands out among other local art offerings exhibited in the mall. Its embodiment serves as a lofty symbol and as a metaphor for idealism and hope. It marks the containment of a global pandemic and is a figurative representation for hope.
The Canopy will be dismantled after the end of this year, but several events are scheduled to allow Macon and visiting friends to pay final homage. The Canopy Gallery Pop Up Shop will offer a variety of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind objects for purchase. Art works and creative souvenirs – silk scarves and party bags, dyed bamboo socks and silk gloves, original paintings, large and small, kazoos for children and art as fashion, art as found objects, art as quilts and more. Visitors are invited to add their names to a hand bound scroll to be opened as a time capsule in 2123, a hundred years from now when Macon celebrates its Tricentennial.
The Gallery exhibit is open each Friday and Saturday in December from 12 noon until 4 PM. The Canopy artwork in the food court is viewable during Macon Mall open hours. Visits are free to everyone.
