Monday, October 16th, 2023

The Fort Hawkins Foundation is excited to announce a partnership with Macon’s Rock Candy Tours to offer a 1.5 hour public walking tour of Fort Hawkins, located at 736 Emery Highway.

The Fort Hawkins Public Walking Tour will be available every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. The cost of the tour is $20.00 per person with a portion of the proceeds supporting the Fort Hawkins Foundation, Inc.

Tours may be booked in advance at rockcandytours.com/book-a-tour.

Fort Hawkins was founded in 1806 by President Thomas Jefferson and Col. Benjamin Hawkins as an Army Fort. At the time, it was the Western frontier and a wilderness that overlooked what became the Federal Road connecting Washington, D.C., to Mobile and New Orleans, and the future site of the city of Macon founded across the river 17 years later.

The site of Fort Hawkins can be found at the intersection of Emery Highway and Maynard Street in Macon. The site is now open on weekends and for special events. Hours are Saturday from Noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
