Macon Sees Slight Uptick in June Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Macon recorded an unemployment rate of 4.1 percent in June, up one-tenth of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.9 percent.

"The bedrock of a thriving economy lies in maintaining low unemployment, but equally essential is striking the right balance between job growth and a capable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Georgia’s industries,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This well-balanced approach ensures businesses of all sizes have the talent they need to grow and succeed." 

The labor force increased in Macon by 38 and ended the month with 100,797. That number went up by 638 when compared to June of 2022.

Macon finished the month with 96,711 employed residents. That number increased by 17 over-the-month and rose by 419 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Macon ended June with 103,200 jobs. That number went up by 200 from May to June and increased by 2,300 when compared to this time last year.

In June, initial unemployment claims were down by 210 (-26%) in Macon. When you compare June 2023 claims to June 2022, claims were up by about 7 percent.
