Rep. Shaw Blackmon, Chairman of the Georgia House's chief tax-policy committee who represents parts of Houston County - including Robins Air Force Base, was chosen to accompany Gov. Brian Kemp along with House Speaker Jon Burns and Senate leader John Kennedy on a week-long economic development mission to Israel. The governor's delegation comprised of approximately two dozen attendees including the three legislators.
During their visit, the delegation engaged in productive discussions with senior Israeli officials and explored potential collaborations with companies interested in expanding their operations in the state of Georgia. The focus was on fostering a stronger partnership between Israel and the state, while discussing policy initiatives that support the growth and development of our shared interests.
While Israel is currently Georgia's 34th largest export market - boasting around 20 Israeli firms with operations in the state, the economic potential of this relationship extends beyond its cultural and religious significance.
Israel's thriving high-tech economy serves as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, making it an attractive prospect for collaboration. Governor Kemp's mission provided an opportunity to meet with some of the nation's top innovators and explore avenues for economic growth.
Rep. Blackmon, recognizing the enduring and committed partnership between Georgia and Israel, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to join the delegation in Israel.
“It was an honor to join our delegation in Israel as our state share’s an enduring and committed partnership with Israel that values fighting back against antisemitism and exploring new avenues for economic growth and innovation,” said Rep. Blackmon.
The visit encompassed a range of activities aimed at enhancing bilateral relationships and expanding economic connectivity. The delegation visited various businesses with operations in Georgia, participated in sit-downs and briefings with Israeli officials, and toured military and cyber security sites.
Notably, just prior to the delegation's arrival, Israeli leaders reached a cease-fire agreement with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad - signifying a step towards peace in the region.
Additionally, Delta's introduction of direct daily flights between Georgia and Israel in March showcased the increasing demand and connectivity between the partners.
The delegation has returned home safely and eagerly anticipates exploring further partnership opportunities leading up to the 2024 Legislative Session.
Representative Shaw Blackmon represents the citizens of District 146, which includes portions of Houston County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 and currently serves as the Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee.
