Houston College and Career Academy Receives Culinary Arts Certification

The Houston College and Career Academy’s Culinary Arts program recently earned Industry Certification. The American Culinary Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEF AC) and their sub committees reviewed the accreditation team report from their October site visit. The purpose of the visit was to review the Culinary/ Baking and Pastry program. The evaluation team’s review of the program noted the following strengths:

1. Chef Wilson is a devoted and passionate instructor and an asset to the program and her students.
2. The administration is supportive and has invested in the future of the program.
3. The faculty is dedicated to student success.
4. Georgia Chef's Foundation is supportive and actively participates in the culinary program.
5. Students have great respect for their instructor and are enthusiastic about the program.

The students in the program were faced with the challenge of impressing the evaluation team. In preparation for the on-site visit, students were tasked with the development of a dish that could be well executed but also appealing to the eye. Students brainstormed for weeks with their peers to decide on the perfect dish. The students chose a red velvet waffle with fried chicken and collard greens on the side. It was also topped with candied bacon and homemade maple syrup.

When the American Culinary Education Foundation (ACF) Evaluation Team arrived, the students were given the opportunity to execute the dish, and it was served perfectly. They passed the test with excellence. Members of the Evaluation Team and guests in attendance made comments such as, “Amazing” and “Tasty” to describe the dishes the students had prepared.

Houston College & Career Academy is located at 1311 Corder Road in Warner Robins, Georgia. Dr. Sherry Johnson serves as Principal/CEO and Chef Suni Wilson is the Culinary Arts Instructor.
