Bells Ringing at The Cottages

When The Cottages of Milledgeville started a handbell choir in September 2022, they wanted a creative, fun activity that would appeal to both independent living and assisted living residents. And following several months of practice, two to three times a week, the choir is now ready and anxious to perform concerts for churches, civic clubs, school groups and more.

Under the direction of activities director Renee Barreth, the choir uses handbells that are color-coded by their specific musical notes, so reading music is not required for the bell-ringers. “This is one of their favorite activities. They have an opportunity to make music,” said Barreth. “Many of them have never played an instrument in their life, and now they can play an instrument.”

Participation in “The Cottages Cardinals” even included selection of the name and mascot for the group. “When we started, we had about 10 members. When other residents heard our practices, they wanted to join so we’re up to about 16 now,” said Barreth.”

With a repertoire ranging from “Amazing Grace” to “It’s a Small World After All,” the Cardinals have performed for groups of ages ranging from pre-school to other seniors living at The Cottages of Milledgeville. Right now all of their performances are inside the gated community at The Cottages. At some point in the near future the handbell choir will take their show on the road, too.
