Middle Georgia Regional Library Hosts Workshops to Increase Diversity of Nonprofit Board Members

Monday, February 13th, 2023

The Middle Georgia Regional Library’s (MGRL) Business and Nonprofit Center (BANC) will be hosting a three-session workshop at Washington Memorial Library that will encourage diverse representation on local nonprofit boards. The training will open up pathways so those who make decisions are representative of our diverse community.

Initially an idea from the COO of Pilot International, Will Butler, who wanted to see more diversity in Macon’s nonprofit board community, the Board Diversity Project began in 2018. Recently, a group of committed and diverse community leaders who want to support and prioritize diversity in leadership positions in Macon-Bibb approached the library for assistance.

The BANC, housed at Washington Memorial Library, provides reference information services for nonprofit organizations including formal instruction on the formation, funding, and organization of nonprofits and has a licensed librarian to provide assistance and training, making it the ideal host site for the workshops.

“Our libraries provide equal and convenient access to all members of our community without barriers,” says Director of Libraries, Jennifer Lautzenheiser. “This gives those interested the opportunity to access information and make meaningful connections without constraint, meeting the requirement of equity that is crucial to the success of this project.”

Thanks to the support of the Knight Foundation, the workshops will be presented by Victoria Prevatt of Goodworks, LLC.

Registration for the workshops opens on Feb. 1 and ends Feb. 17. Seating is limited to 25 participants who will be required to participate in all three workshops. The schedule is as follows:

Feb. 18 from 9 AM - 11 AM- Session 1: Nonprofit Impact and Why Serve on A Nonprofit Board

March 18 from 9 AM - 11 AM - Session 2: The Rules, Roles and Responsibilities of Nonprofit Board Members

April 1 from 9 AM - 11 AM - Session 3: A Deeper Dive: The Secret Sauce to Successful Nonprofit Boards
