MVC Celebrates 20 Years of Pro Bono Service to Community
Wednesday, January 4th, 2023
Macon Volunteer Clinic is proud to announce that 2023 marks its 20th anniversary of service to the Macon-Bibb County community (and, almost one year of service to Twiggs!).
In February of 2003, with donated funding, services and facilities, Macon Volunteer Clinic opened its doors. Its mission? To foster primary healthcare for all working adults in Macon-Bibb County, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.
Twenty years later, Macon Volunteer Clinic continues to be powered by philanthropy and volunteer physicians, dentists, nurses and others. And, its services are at no cost to those who are eligible.
Lack of health insurance is the single greatest impediment to access to healthcare in the U.S. Uninsured people are less likely to receive medical care, more likely to die early, and more likely to have poor health status.
Macon Volunteer Clinic’s patients are hardworking neighbors who would otherwise fall through the cracks of our healthcare system. Some don’t work enough hours to qualify for employer benefits. Many are self-employed, or contract workers in the service industry. They might be fast food workers, children’s daycare workers, janitors, housekeepers, groundskeepers, barbers, artists.
To be eligible, a patient must be between 18 and 64 years of age, have no other medical insurance, work, and earn at or lower than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
“We are passionate about our mission of caring for the uninsured, financially challenged workers of Bibb and Twiggs counties, helping them manage and maintain their health while avoiding emergency rooms which are better utilized for true emergencies,” states Executive Director Nancy White. “That our mission has flourished these 20 years is a testament to our community, which donates its time, talent and treasure to sustain our operations. We hope our community will celebrate its accomplishment with us on February 10th.”
All are invited to celebrate Macon Volunteer Clinic and propel it into the next 20 years by attending its ‘Love Boat’ event Friday, February 10, 6:30-9:30 pm at Idle Hour Country Club.
