Monday, January 30th, 2023
The Houston County Career Academy (HCCA), Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC), Houston Healthcare (HHC) and the Houston County Development Authority have partnered to host the fourth-annual Houston Health Science Summit called More Than Scrubs on Thursday, February 2. High school sophomores throughout Houston County have been invited to attend More Than Scrubs in hopes of growing a local workforce to meet the needs of Houston Healthcare, the fourth largest employer in the county. More than Scrubs will be held from 8:30 a.m. to Noon on February 2 at CGTC’s Sonny Watson Health Sciences Building, located on their Warner Robins campus.
More Than Scrubs aims to ignite an interest in both clinical and non-clinical healthcare careers, such as business administration, information technology, and HVAC/industrial maintenance.
“We are excited to partner with the Houston County Career Academy, Central Georgia Technical College and the Houston County Development Authority to showcase the many diverse healthcare career opportunities available here at Houston Healthcare,” said Charles Briscoe, Houston Healthcare’s Chief Executive Officer. “When people think of healthcare, doctors and nurses often come to mind first, and it is true that a robust pipeline of talented bedside providers is critical to patient care. However, it takes a wide range of people from every skill and profession, clinical and non-clinical, to properly care for our patients and their families. More Than Scrubs is an essential educational event bringing local healthcare professionals together to provide these talented young people a view of healthcare and all career opportunities available within this ever-growing field.”
In addition to Briscoe, students will hear from:
Dr. Ivan Allen, President, CGTC;
Dr. Mark Scott, Superintendent of Schools, Houston County School District;
Siggy Tetteh, VP - Chief Information Officer, HHC;
Shellisa Houston Martin, VP - Chief Nursing Officer, HHC;
David Rossman, Director of Engineering, HHC;
David Borghelli, Director of Emergency Medical Services, HHC; and
Melissa Phagan, VP - Chief of Staff, HHC
The event will be facilitated by Kimberly Gunn, CGTC High School Initiatives Director, and Angie Gheesling, Houston County Development Authority Executive Director.
Dr. Sherry Johnson, Principal and CEO of the Houston County Career Academy, said, “The purpose of our career academy is to prepare our students as they enter the business and industry workforce in and around Houston County. More than Scrubs is just one more way we can showcase the vast array of job opportunities available to students as they graduate.”
Current students who are interested in attending should reach out to their counselor to obtain the necessary permission forms. For more information on More than Scrubs, please contact Dr. Sherry Johnson at (478) 322-3280 or [email protected].
