On October 30, 1922, WMAZ radio went on the air as Macon’s first radio station. Originally broadcasting from the Mercer University campus as a physics project of Dr. C.R. Fountain, the station was the second licensed radio station in Georgia, going on the air over seven months after WSB in Atlanta.

The four-part podcast, 100 Years of AM 940 will be published as one 30-minute episode per day, beginning Thursday, October 27, through the station’s birthday on Sunday, October 30. The podcast will be available free at https://middlegapodcasts.podbean.com/

This anniversary special was first broadcast on radio in 2000. It includes interviews with WMAZ radio legends Bill Elder, Bill Tribble, Billy Sowell, Helen Farmer Popejoy, Del Ward, Don King, Rev. Jimmy Waters, Paul Beliveau, Steve Malone and Wallace Mercer. Narrated by former WMAZ and WSB announcer Gary Guntor, the series also includes excerpts from old network radio shows, sports broadcasts, Uncle Ned and the Hayloft Jamboree, the Smile Awhile Quartet, and the last Bill Powell show.
