A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the Houston County Aquatic Center on Thursday, August 18 at 8:00 a.m. This project is a joint effort between the Houston County Commissioners, Houston County Board of Education, and the Cities of Warner Robins, Centerville, and Perry. Funding for the Aquatic Center came from a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The new facility will be located on Cohen Walker Drive across from Freedom Field.
Once completed, the Houston County Aquatic Center will feature a 50-meter pool and a warm-up pool. The facility will be available for community use and will also serve as a host site for competitive swimming events.
The Houston County Board of Education donated the land for the Aquatic Center and is managing the construction. Representatives from around the county served on the design committee, which was co-chaired by Dr. Christopher Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and District Operations for the Houston County School District.
He said, “The Houston County Aquatic Center will be a tremendous asset for our community. Not only will it provide additional recreational activities for our residents, it will impact our local economy through the competitive swimming events that will be hosted here. Many people have been involved in making this facility a reality, and it’s exciting to see construction begin.”
The project was designed by Cooper Cary, and the construction manager is Parrish Construction Group.
