Fifty years ago, April 15, 1972, Elvis Presley performed two sold out shows at the Macon Coliseum. Though this was Presley’s fifth tour since 1970, none of the previous four tours had included Macon, and this was the first time Elvis had performed in Macon.
“When Elvis Came To Macon – 50 Years Ago” shares the unique perspectives of Jim Lavery, Ron Wildman and Elaine Greene. Lavery remembers how his father, the late Bill Lavery who managed the Macon Coliseum then, was able to book the Elvis concerts. He also talks about his own role in Elvis Presley’s escape from the huge crowds.
Ron Wildman, a journalist with WMAZ-TV then, shares his memories of covering Elvis’ arrival at the Macon Coliseum, his departure from the Macon Municipal Airport, and his part in helping the warm-up act for the concerts.
Elaine Greene, who has often been described as Middle Georgia’s biggest Elvis fan, talks about what it was like to see Presley in-person for the first time. This experience played a key role in her many visits to Graceland since, and her devoting an entire room in her home to her collection of Elvis memorabilia.
