Vandal Spraypaints MTA Mural

Thursday, March 10th, 2022

Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority is heartbroken to report that a vandal spray painted our beautiful new mural, Spirit of Macon. We believe the crime was committed in the middle of the night, late Tuesday/early Wednesday, March 8/9.

Every MTA bus on every route six days a week passes the intersection of Fifth and Poplar Street, the location of this new wrap-around mural which was unveiled at a ribbon cutting on January 28, 2022.

The mural was painted in 23 days in December 2021/January 2022 by Georgia College and State University art professor, Abraham Abebe. It was funded by the Knight Foundation and Peyton Anderson Foundation through a Downtown Challenge 2.0 Grant, overseen by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

What kind of person willfully destroys inspirational public art that brings joy to everyone who sees it?

If you have any information on this crime (Criminal Damage to Property), please call Crimestoppers, (877) 68-CRIME, or the Bibb Sheriff’s Office, (478) 751-7500.

MTA wants to alert the community that if caught, the perpetrator will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
