Macon Sees Hike in January Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Macon recorded an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent, up five-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 5.9 percent. Despite this, Macon saw a rise in the labor force in the month of January.

"Even though we continue to see Georgia's workforce be successfully employed in record-breaking numbers, there is still much more work to do as we continue to see hundreds of thousands of jobs needed to be filled" said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Macon by 132 and ended the month with 104,319. That number is up 1,064 when compared to January of 2021.

Macon finished the month with 100,463 employed residents. That number decreased by 441 over the month and is up by 3,325 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Macon ended January with 102,500 jobs. That number is down by 1,700 from December to January and increased by 4,300 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went up by 54 percent in Macon in January. When compared to last January, claims were down by about 81 percent.
