Georgia Women of Achievement to Celebrate 30th Anniversary, Largest Induction Class on Wednesday

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022

Georgia Women of Achievement celebrates its 30th anniversary with the largest induction ceremony in the history of the organization on Wednesday, March 9, 11 a.m., at Wesleyan College’s Pierce Chapel in Macon, Georgia. The ceremony will be followed by a luncheon in Anderson Dining Hall for family and friends of the inductees, members of the organization, and other guests. The ceremony is free and open to the public, but a ticket must be purchased for the luncheon.

Each year during Women’s History Month, the organization adds to its Hall of Fame women who have made significant contributions to the State of Georgia. This year, eight women will be inducted: Ruby Maude Anderson (1893-1978), Mary Givens Bryan (1910-1964), Laura Pope Forester (1873-1953), Allethea “Allie” Murray Smith (1873-1953), Lizzie Lurline Collier (1893-1986), Josephine Fields Sanders (1895-1975), Hedwig Grace “Hedy” West (1938-2005), and Josephine Mathewson Wilkins (1893-1977).

According to GWA president, Dr. Penny L. Elkins, the mission of the organization is “to honor, inspire, and educate Georgians about the significant contributions of women who were educators, activists, artists, cultural shifters, diplomatic ambassadors, and so much more, as are the eight women who will be inducted in the March 9 ceremony.”

The 30th anniversary event will also recognize Rosalynn Carter, former first lady of the United States, who proposed the vision for GWA. It will also honor three decades of service from members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Selections who lead the organization.
