Dr. Walter Stephens Named Executive Director of School Operations for Houston County School District

Dr. Walter Stephens was named Executive Director of School Operations during the Houston County Board of Education meeting held January 11, 2021. Dr. Stephens has been with the District for 14 years.
Dr. Stephens is a native of Twiggs County and a graduate of Twiggs County High School. He attended Tuskegee University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. Dr. Stephens earned a Master of Public Administration from Southern University and A & M College and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Mercer University.
Dr. Stephens began his teaching and administrative career at Twiggs County Comprehensive Middle and High School. In 2008, Dr. Stephens joined the Houston County School District as the Assistant Principal at Northside High School and was later named Principal of Thomson Middle School, which at the time was the only Title 1 whole school STEM Certified School in the State of Georgia. In 2019, Dr. Stephens was hired as a Director of School Operations, where he served prior to being named Executive Director of School Operations.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be recommended by Dr. Scott and approved by the Board for this position,” said Dr. Stephens. “I am very excited to continue the great work that is taking place in our district. I am blessed to work in a school district where my children are well educated and in a community where my wife and I call home.”
Dr. Stephens and his wife, Renee, who is also a teacher in the District, have four sons: James, twins Joseph and Jordan, and Jonathan.
