Sen. Larry Walker Joins Gov. Kemp to Announce Tax Break for Military Retirees
Monday, January 31st, 2022
Yesterday, Sen. Larry Walker (R – Perry) joined Governor Brian Kemp, Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan and other state and federal leaders for a military roundtable at the VECTR Training Center in Warner Robins, where Governor Kemp announced legislation to create a Career Military Retirement Income Tax Exclusion for Georgia’s veterans.
“The military retirement income tax issue is one of our top priorities. Not only do we want to reward our veterans for their service to our country, we also want to encourage them to live in Georgia for their second career, bolstering our workforce.” said Sen. Walker. “This Career Military Retirement Income Tax Exclusion will help ease the financial burden on our military families and further Georgia’s reputation as one of the most pro-military states in the nation. On behalf of Middle Georgia, home to many current service members and military veterans, I thank Gov. Kemp for his commitment to these brave men and women. I look forward to supporting this legislation as it advances through the General Assembly.”
The proposed legislation would allocate around $60 million for state income tax exemptions for career military veterans, with qualified veterans able to exempt up to $17,500 of career military retirement income and an additional $17,500 in earned income. The proposed legislation is expected to be introduced in the Georgia House of Representatives in the coming weeks.
