Piedmont Macon to Offer Low-dose CT Lung Cancer Screening Special Rate for Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021
Each year, lung cancer is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer. Sadly, according to the US National Institute of Health, more than half of people with lung cancer die within one year of being diagnosed. As with many types of cancer, early detection has been proven to dramatically improve lung cancer survival rates.
Piedmont Macon will offer special low-dose CT lung screenings on Tuesday, November 9. A low dose CT lung cancer screening is the only approved way to screen for lung cancer. The cash price for the screening is $131; however, many insurances cover that cost if you meet the screening criteria:
- Between 50 and 80 years old
- Asymptomatic (you are without signs or symptoms of current disease)
- Have a history of heavy cigarette usage
“Studies have revealed that a low-dose CT lung screen can decrease lung cancer mortality by 14 to 20 percent,” said Dr. Norman “Chip” Hetzler, a cardiothoracic surgeon with Piedmont Macon. “These special lung screening events have helped us catch lung cancer in patients that otherwise wouldn’t have been screened and have truly saved lives across middle Georgia.”
A physician will be present at the event to speak with anyone with other risk factors or concerns to determine if screening is appropriate. Appointments for the low-dose CT screening will be offered between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call (478) 751-0502.
