Freedom for All Macon Solidarity Run+Walk 5K Returns for an Independence Day Event

Staff Report

Unity requires harmonious movement bound together by a common truth. The second annual Freedom for All Macon Solidarity Run + Walk 5K seeks to bring unity through our storied past. On July 4, 2020 at 8 a.m., all are invited to join in a walking/running tour of Macon’s stories of racial injustice in an effort to bring context, spark awareness and change in the community’s disparities connected to skin color.

“Liberty and Justice for all is a phrase we hear all our lives, but that isn’t something that many Americans have experienced in life,” stated co-founder Nancy Cleveland. “Whether it’s due to skin color, sexual orientation, or any other identifier, many people have been systematically denied liberty and justice. Freedom For All is about claiming Independence Day as a day for everyone. By looking at a more comprehensive understanding of our history, we can better understand how to move forward together.”

The 5K will begin and end at the Tubman Museum. It will also highlight historical African-American markers along the route, including Macon’s historic Tybee neighborhood and Greenwood Bottom. Lastly, the race will also name the victims of gun violence in Macon this year, culminating in a public art installation.

"The activism and awareness that surged over the past year is not over. By taking an honest look back at our history, we can honor those who were abused, confront our wrong-doing as a nation and a city, acknowledge the progress that has been made, but also renew our commitment to continually pushing our community forward. There is work to be done, individually and collectively. Not only is this an opportunity for people to educate themselves on some of our history, but also an opportunity to denounce the practice of discrinimation, honor past victims, declare solidarity, and commit to building a future for our community that accepts nothing less than freedom for all," said co-founder Rachelle Wilson.

Registration for the Freedom for All Macon Solidarity Run + Walk 5K is $25.00 and open to the public. Media is invited to attend. Participants can walk, run, or virtually participate. Register, donate, and find more information at maconfreedomforall.com.
