STEM Engineering Camp for Girls at Houston County Career Academy

Friday, June 11th, 2021

The Houston County Career Academy held a free STEM Summer Camp for current eighth and ninth grade students enrolled in the Houston County School District. The camp began June 1, and ended June 10.

Each student was able to explore four major areas of engineering with emphasis on teamwork, problem solving and design.  The campers also investigated various engineering fields, met women engineers, participated in daily hands-on activities and designed projects.

Sabrina Phelps, Principal/CEO of the Houston County Career Academy, said, “Engineering offers a vast array of opportunities for a career that is rewarding, not just financially, but provides much personal satisfaction while solving problems faced by society in general.”

Katelyn Harris, a rising 10th-grade student at Warner Robins High School and STEM camp participant, said, “This camp is an eye opener. It showed me that although STEM is male-dominated, it still has many opportunities for girls.  It shows me the many opportunities that I have in the future.”

The Houston County Career Academy is located at 1311 Corder Road in Warner Robins. Phelps may be reached at[email protected] or 478-322-3280, ext. 1674.
