Mayor Miller to Announce Details in Upcoming Community-wide Cleanup
Thursday, June 10th, 2021
Macon-Bibb County and Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful (KMBB) will hold a press conference on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Commission Chambers at City Hall (700 Poplar Street). Together, they and several neighborhood representatives will announce how people can get involved in the second community-wide Clean Streets Matter event.
It will be broadcast live on Macon-Bibb County’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/maconbibbcounty.
The second community-wide cleanup will be held Saturday, July 24. This comes after the success from the first cleanup on April 11, 2o21 where more than 1,500 people in more than 80 groups came together and removed more than 109,000 pounds of trash and debris from the streets. Our Public Works, Solid Waste, and Parks and Beautification Departments mobilized their crews and picked up what the groups collected.
“It’s incredible to see what our community can do when we come together to keep our streets clean,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “This initiative can have an impact on public safety, economic development, tourism, neighborhood pride, and so much more, but we all have to put in the effort.”
“KMBB has been blown away by the amount of people in our community who have stepped up to be a part of the Clean Streets Matter initiative,” said KMBB Executive Director Caroline Childs. “From hosting community cleanups and participating in our county wide cleanup, members are making a difference and creating a greener and cleaner Macon.”
Our Clean Streets Matter initiative began on Friday, January 15. Since that effort:
· KMBB has supported or helped plan for the future about 100 neighborhood cleanups;
· crews from Macon-Bibb County cleaned more than 2 million pounds of debris from more than 230 illegal dump sites;
· The Macon Water Authority has swept more than 831,000 pounds of dirt, leaves, pine straw, and litter from more than 88 miles of road; and
· More than 3 million pounds of yard waste has been collected.
